Reckless
I'm not a hero.
I don't save people. Don't get involved. Don't let anyone close enough to see how broken I really am.
Then I find her in the parking lot. She's pressed against the door, surrounded by men demanding she come home to the marriage she ran from.
One look at those terrified eyes and I'm standing between her and them like I have any right to protect someone this good.
She's a runaway bride hiding from a dangerous man who thinks he owns her.
I'm an ex-soldier with PTSD who fights in underground rings because pain doesn't register the way it should.
We're a disaster waiting to happen.
But then she sits on my couch. Tells me I'm more than the violence that built them.
Like the nightmares and the constant ringing in my ears don't make me unfixable.
I should walk away. Should let her go before I drag her down with all my damage.
Instead, I pull her closer.
Because Nora Hayes is worth burning my entire world down for.
