Hot Shot

I've been in love with Fox Nelson since I was young.

Everyone knows it too. My friends, my family, half the town of North Ridge—they all know about my hopeless crush on the moody, rugged mountain man next door.

Everyone except Fox himself.

And maybe that's for the best. Because Fox Nelson is a wildland firefighter who jumps out of planes into burning forests for a living. He's dangerous, damaged, and way out of my league.

But lately, something's changed.

Fox isn't looking at me like a friend anymore. He's looking at me like a man looks at a woman he wants. And when he touches me—those skilled, rough hands lingering just a little too long—it doesn't feel friendly at all.

I tell myself it doesn't mean anything.

He tells himself the same thing.

But when the summer heat becomes unbearable and we're thrown together more than ever, the line between friendship and something deeper starts to blur.

Fox says he's not good for me. That his demons are too dark, his job too dangerous.

I say I'm tired of being treated like I'm made of glass.

He says I don't know what I'm asking for.

I say I'm about to show him exactly what I want.

Because I have one more secret Fox doesn't know about—one that will change everything between us.

And I'm finally ready to tell him.
