Scout’s Honor

I came here to get lost.

To bury the girl who cried through her mother's hospice nights and let a man like Josh whisper his way into her bones. I thought if I packed enough food and walked far enough into the wild, I'd finally hear myself again. Maybe even become someone new.

I didn't expect him.

Kael isn't human. Not exactly. He's taller than the myths say, quieter too—careful in a way that makes the cave walls feel like home and the world outside feel foreign. He saved me from the man who promised he wouldn't stop until I was his again. But Kael doesn't want to own me. He just… sees me. The way no one ever has.

Now I'm hiding in the hollow of a mountain, learning how to communicate without words. How to breathe without fear. How to want something real.

But Josh is still out there, and he won't stop until I'm caught—or gone.

And Kael? He may be the only thing strong enough to protect me.
