Hannah’s Highest Regard

Seventeen-year-old Hannah Atwell met Lieutenant Jake Burdock at a Fort Riley dance at the end of the Civil War. In spite their instant attraction, they are separated for long periods of time since Jake is assigned to duty at the frontier forts of western Kansas. Seldom able to visit with Hannah in person, they connect through letters. She knows he offers her his highest regard, but is that the same as love?

Two years later, she still harbors the desire to be an officer’s wife. While visiting Fort Riley with her father, she meets another lieutenant, Andrew Call. Personable and charming, she is flattered that he pursues her. Soon, she is convinced he loves her—and she has lost her heart to him. With his assurance that he desires for her to forever be a part of his life, she is sure a marriage proposal is imminent, and he will be able to fulfill her dreams.

An unexpected visitor at Fort Riley turns Hannah’s world upside-down. Her plans crumble around her. She must decide how to respond to what she learns, even if she is left heartbroken. Must she give up her dream, or will she end up with the man who will fulfill them?
