A Proposal to Cicely

In this delightful early short story, Georgette Heyer showcases her trademark wit and sharp eye for human behavior in a tale of love, misunderstanding, and the quiet comedy of manners.

Cicely Carruthers is intelligent, spirited, and weary of tiresome suitors. Chief among them is her persistent cousin, Richard Spalding, who has proposed to her more than once—only to be turned down every time. Seeking peace and escape from societal expectations, Cicely retreats to the countryside with her friend Maisie, where she finds rustic simplicity… and unexpected complications.

When a well-meaning but uncouth local farmer mistakes Cicely’s kindness for affection, she finds herself in an awkward and potentially compromising situation. Just when things begin to spiral, Richard reappears—and perhaps this time, his proposal will not be so easily refused.

Originally published in 1922 in The Happy Magazine, A Proposal to Cicely is a charming early work that foreshadows Heyer’s later mastery of the romantic comedy. Though short in length, it is rich in tone and period detail, offering a spirited look at love, social roles, and the importance of choosing wisely—not just in romance, but in life.

A must-read for fans of Heyer’s Regency novels and those who appreciate clever heroines, determined heroes, and a touch of irony in their romantic fiction.
